What this language does

Arabic is built on three-consonant roots: from one root come “book”, “to write”, “library”, “office”. Vocabulary is not a list but a tree — and every speaker feels it while speaking.

The untranslatable

طرب
ṭarab

The emotional state music produces — at once the listener's ecstasy and the quality that causes it.

Hello

السلام عليكم · as-salāmu ʿalaykum
“peace be upon you” — the reply returns the formula reversed

Work in progress

A script that is also an art. And a literature in which poetry comes long before prose.
