The threshold

Arma virumque cano, Troiae qui primus ab oris…
I sing of arms and of the man who first, from the shores of Troy…
Virgile, Énéide, I, 1 (v. 29-19 av. J.-C.)

What this language does

Latin declines, and so it frees word order: a poet can nest one sentence inside another, hold back the verb for six lines, interlace two clauses like two threads. It has no articles either — a Latin noun is neither definite nor indefinite, it simply is.

The untranslatable

pietas

What you owe your gods, your country and your parents — all three in one word, and one virtue.

Hello

Salve
“be well” — an imperative about health, not a polite formula

Work in progress

The dead language still speaking inside our own. And a reading experience unlike any other: deciphering a language nobody has as a mother tongue, which means nobody owns it better than you do.
